This fledgling magpie arrived one day when we opened the front door to feed the cat.At first, we were terrified that the cat would go for the magpie, but luckily he was more non-plussed by events than we were.

Knowing that it's best not to interfere with fledgling birds, we tried to shoo it away, but unfortunately it wasn't afraid of us. It just kept gaping to be fed.

In the end I wrapped it up in a towel and put it back on top of the hedge, but it just hopped back down and sat outside the front door. After about half an hour it got bored, shat on the step, and left.

Strangely, several other people in our area have reported being approached by fledgling birds in the last couple of weeks. One for Arthur C Clarke...
